This production requires 8 actors:
5 women and 3 men.

ACTOR 1, F
MORJEAN GOLD: Thirty years old. A smart, fast-moving, urban woman. She is in a loving marriage and seems to be happy... as happy as a perfectionist can be. When things break down, MORJEAN feels the need to fix them. When things are out of control she feels the need to control them. MORJEAN cares very deeply about the people around her, and has become quite skilled in the art of appearing OK so as not to worry anyone.

ACTOR 2, M
JACK GOLD: Thirty-two years old. A calm, capable, great-looking guy who is genuinely in love with his wife. JACK is one of those rare men who really has his priorities in order, but still has his vulnerable moments. He is usually a rock but occasionally falls victim to panic and anxiety.

ACTOR 3, M
JOE: Fifty-eight. A mostly ineffectual man who loves his wife and daughter but has some very antiquated notions about their emotional life. He's always going around fixing things but nothing around him ever really gets fixed. JOE thinks that everything he says is important and is being listened to, and has absolutely no idea that nobody is really listening.

DOCTOR READE: Fifty. A WASPy, successful doctor who has seen it all but still remains genuinely engaged and concerned with each new patient. He is an old-school, by-the-book doctor who expects his patients to listen to him. He likes martinis.

ORTHOPEDIST: Forty. A pediatric orthopedist who often deals with newborns. We first see him as MORJEAN does: An emotionless, clinical, monstrous man. Later we see him as a regular person who happens to be a doctor and is perhaps ill-prepared to deal with the tenuous emotional life of his patients' mothers.

ACTOR 4, M
STEVENSON: Thirty-three years old. A teller of truths and a shower of shows. A truly loyal friend who would lay down his life for MORJEAN, but in the meantime, is focused on avoiding any real painful moments in his own life by hiding in MORJEAN's home or batting around witty punch-lines.

WAITER: Twenty five, but an old soul. He wants more than anything to write his novel, but after that he'd like to get home tonight and take a shower because he feels like crap and his boyfriend is home in the apartment alone.

FURNITURE SALESMAN: Appears in B-grade television advertisements every year for his family furniture supply warehouse in Paramus New Jersey.

ACTOR 5, F
LYNN: Fifty-seven. A woman ruled by her own insecurities. She knows and shows more than she would ever dare say. Is constantly engaged in the action of smoothing things over.

TINA/WOMAN 2: Twenty-eight. Six months pregnant with twins. Feels responsible for making everything PC. Constantly "glossing over". There are probably a lot of real feelings and opinions in there somewhere, but for now she's going to push them way down deep inside. Headed for a major freak out in about 5 years.

FURNITURE SALESWOMAN: Vapid.

ACTOR 6, F
LAUREN/WOMAN 3: Thirty-four. Type "A". Busy, busy, busy. LAUREN is, like MORJEAN, completely immersed in the task of appearing in control. At the same time, she is honestly compassionate and would really like to have an impact on the people around her. Basically, she is going to make the world a better place or die trying. Lauren probably suffers from PPD but has managed to just work it in to her day.

AYELLIT: Forty. An earthy, calm, compassionate beacon of hope for all of the pregnant women who come to her for midwifery services. An accomplished and experienced midwife who has seen it all and is surprised by nothing, yet still has concern and compassion for every woman who sits on her exam table. Smart, capable, kind and exudes an aura of serenity that effects everyone in her presence. She really listens to what MORJEAN has to say, perhaps more than anyone else in the play. She has a wisdom and an understanding that puts everyone else at ease.

STAR MOM: A movie star who has recently written a book about her personal experiences with Post Partum Depression and is being interviewed for an entertainment television news program. Completely at ease in front of the camera, and certain of her words, she speaks with authority and compassion to her audience and urges women to seek help if they are having trouble with motherhood.

ACTOR 7, F
BARBARA/WOMAN 4: Forty. Hugely pregnant and over it. With two consecutive pregnancies within 3 months of each other, she is simply too busy and too tired to bother with politeness. She is quick, real and raw. Sometimes gets mean and surprises herself, but chalks it up to hormones. A person who has had to put her own personal needs aside in the interest of family.

RECEPTIONIST: Works for AYELLIT, the midwife. Has been waiting all day for someone to come in so she can try out her new joke.

KAREN: Texas mother who appears as a vision to MORJEAN. KAREN enjoyed parenting her first two children but went crazy after giving birth to her third. Her psychosis eventually took over and she committed an atrocity.

HOSTESS: A Spanish-Speaking talk show host on a Latin cable station. The South American equivalent of Jenny Jones. Extremely exited about her next guest. Counting on a major ratings boost.

ACTOR 8, F
CHERYL/WOMAN 1: Thirty-one. She is 8 months pregnant and feels guilty about every single one of her choices.

SHIELA: Mother of four who appears to MORJEAN as a vision. SHIELA fell victim to Postpartum Depression after the birth of her fourth child. Left undiagnosed, her condition worsened and she eventually abandoned her family

NURSE: Forty-three. Came to the US from Trinidad and went to nursing school because she couldn't find anything better to do. Is really sick of hearing these over-privileged women bitch and moan and is watching the clock until the end of her shift. Doesn't listen. At all.

TALK SHOW QUEEN: Smart, professional and on the top of her game. She knows her subject and suspects this interview will have a great impact on some of her viewers.
